Position statement of the Diabetes Québec Professional Council – Adults living with diabetes must be given priority for COVID-19 vaccination

January 22, 2021

In light of the most recent scientific data1-2-3-4, the Diabetes Québec Professional Council (CPDQ) is reiterating its demand that the Québec government and the Québec health authority (INSPQ) revise its list of priority groups for COVID-19 vaccination so that all adults living with diabetes, including younger age groups with type 1 diabetes, can benefit from a vaccination much earlier than what has been proposed to date.

The science indicates that when adults with any type of diabetes contract COVID-19, the likelihood of a negative outcome is much higher than for non-diabetics.

The CPDQ acknowledges that while there is still little data on the coronavirus vaccines for people with different types of diabetes, the available data are positive. Historically, patients with diabetes of all types have benefited greatly from being vaccinated.

For this reason, we believe that it is essential to consider chronic disease sufferers when prioritizing groups for COVID-19 vaccination.
