Position statement on the introduction of a tax on sugary drinks dedicated to prevention in 2022

Diabetes Québec believes that preventive measures must be put in place to reduce the pressure on the health care system and promote the health and well-being of the population in Québec.

The collateral effects of the pandemic on lifestyle habits, such as physical activity and diet, suggest worrying consequences on health. In 2020, Diabetes Quebec had taken a position on the subject HERE.

In 2022, Diabetes Québec is once again joining forces with the Coalition Québécoise sur la Problématique du Poids, Capsana, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society to invite the government to introduce a tax on sugary and energy drinks that would be reinvested in prevention as a promising strategy to reduce the pressure on the healthcare system.
